Once I was able to downloadand the patch and then run the compatibility problem solver within the control panel under programs

Make older programs run in this version of Windows
I was able to get the game running in both Windows 7 and Vista.
Vista I deleted the desktop shortcut as I had already installed it before finding the compatibility issue. When I installed in Windows 7 I elected not to install the shortcut- as per a thread I had been following.
The hardest thing to solve the problem was finding the patch. I still can't find the page it was on but when I typed
Installing NWN1 for Win7vista including patch links - the right page came up
I'll try and copy and paste the link into this but not sure if it will work. This is the download file that you need with Never Winter Nights Diamond toget it working.

The patch downloaded adn installed very easily.
After installing the patch I ran the 'make older programs run in this version of windows' -using XP service pack 2 (in Vista) and either 2 or 3 in Windows 7.
